Favorite Beauty Products of 2015

No fancy introduction needed! Here are my top favorite beauty products of 2015, divided into three categories: skincare, makeup, and hair products.

What were your favorite beauty products of 2015?

Nature Republic AQUA Super Aqua Max Combination Watery Cream

This has quickly become my favorite daily moisturizer! It is extremely moisturizing without being heavy. The gel formula keeps it soothing and refreshing as well!

Estee Lauder Advanced Repair Night Serum Synchronized Complex II

Okay, to be honest I have only had a sample of this eye cream, but it is beyond brillant. Before trying this eye cream out, I was using the Origins Ginzing Refreshing Eye Cream which I thought I really liked…but after using this one, there is no comparison! I can actually tell a huge difference in my under eyes after using it. I will definitely be purchasing the full size.

Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash

This is a great basic face wash. There’s nothing super fancy or amazing about it, but I find myself continually going back to it after trying different face washes. I love the slightly minty smell it has!

Freeman Charcoal & Black Sugar Polishing Mask

charcoal black sugar

I use this almost every single time I take a shower! After I wash my hair I rub the mask into my skin and let it sit while I wash my body. Then I massage the scrub on my face for around a minute and wash it off. My skin handles exfoliation really well so using this multiple times a week is perfect for me. I have really fallen in love with it!

Etude House Wonder Pore

wonder pore

This is a fantastic toner! It has really made a difference in the appearance and size of my pores. Surprisingly, it has also really helped to tone down some of the redness on my face.

GlamGlow Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment Mask

I love love love love this treatment mask. I really tried not to fall for it because it is stupid expensive (as I discussed in a previous article) but I can’t help myself. I love how tingly it is and how nice and clean my skin is after using it.

Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water

I’ve tried a few different micellar waters including the Simple one, the Formula 10.0.6 one, and the Sephora version. While the Sephora and Formula 10.0.6 ones were good, the Simple one didn’t work for me. So I was ready to throw in the towel on micellar waters when I saw this one in the drugstore. And I am so happy I did! This is my favorite way to remove my eye makeup. It removes all my makeup without me having to rub really hard at my eyes. I also love to use it for refreshing my face mid-day or touching up my makeup.

Honest Beauty Everything Cream Foundation

This is a really new discovery for me but I had to include it! This foundation is a serious game changer for me! It is formulated without harsh chemicals so it doesn’t irritate my skin long term which I love. I also really like the coverage. It covers up all the redness on my face but still looks extremely natural! Like my skin but better! I’ve been slowly trying our more and more of the Honest Beauty line so a full review will be coming soon! Try Honest Beauty HERE!

bareMinerals Ready Foundation

Another foundation favorite – this one a rediscovery! I had moved away from this foundation last year and was trying more liquid foundations, but I rediscovered this in my collection and have been using it a lot this year! It perfectly smooths and perfects my skin while still looking natural. This one can be more powdery than the Honest Beauty Creme Foundation (obviously) but some setting spray definitely helps to cut that down.

Be a Bombshell Cosmetics Smooth Criminal Powder

When I want my skin to look flawless, this is the number one product I reach for! It is perfect over every foundation and perfect on it’s own as well! On days when I don’t feel like wearing foundation at all, this really helps to smooth my skin.

Maybelline Superstay Better Skin Concealer

This is the BEST concealer! I love it under my eyes and on any blemishes! It blends out perfectly and layers really well. And my other favorite thing about it? It comes in the shade Light/Medium! Most other concealers I’ve tried either come in Light or Medium which are always either too light or dark for me. But the Light/Medium shade is perfect!

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light

I debated for a long time about purchasing an Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder, but I’m glad I did! This adds the perfect amount of light and glow to my cheekbones without looking glittery or shiny. Definitely worth the splurge.

NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base

Hands down the BEST eyeshadow primer out there. Enough said.

LORAC Eyeshadows (LORAC Pro, LORAC Pro 2, LORAC Mega Pro 2)

The eyeshadow winner for me this year was definitely LORAC. In 2015 I purchased three LORAC palettes and I love each and every one of them. The LORAC Pro Palette has the perfect selection of neutrals (with a formula that blends effortlessly and never gets muddy on the eyes like the Urban Decay) while the LORAC Pro 2 Palette has beautiful neutrals with a pop of bold color. The shining star though is definitely the LORAC Mega Pro 2. I missed out on the first Mega Pro Palette and I will never forgive myself so when this one came out, I snatched it up right away! The Mega Pro 2 plus the other two pro palettes is the perfect combination. I’ve been incredibly pleased with my eyeshadow this year and these palettes are the reason why!

Eylure Brow Palette in Mid Brown No. 20

I stumbled upon this brow palette in Ulta in the summer and never looked back! When I want my brows to look on fleek, this is my go to! The color is perfect for my brows and the product is super easy to use.

The Face Shop My Lips Eat Cherry Aqua Tint #2

I loooooove lip stains, mostly because smeared lipstick is my ultimate pet peeve! I seriously love this lip stain because the color is beautiful, it wears wonderfully, and it doesn’t over dry my lips out! I also love that this lip stain wears off evenly. I know that when I get home from wearing it all day and look in the mirror, I will still be happy with it!

Beauty Blender Original

beauty blender

Oh Beauty Blender, how I hate that I love you so much! I was so in denial before purchasing my Beauty Blender and giving it a fair shot. I did not thing this little sponge could be as good as everyone says it is…but it totally is. Absolutely worth it!

TokyoMilk Dark No. 10 Everything & Nothing Eau De Parfum

This has been my scent of the year! I adore the notes of sweet orange blossoms in this perfume and love how easy it is to wear. I know I can put it on and it won’t be overpowering or offensive to people with sensitive noses! And my favorite thing about it? The price! At only $36 it is seriously wallet friendly and doesn’t feel like I’m spraying dollar bills into the air every time I use it. I will admit that it doesn’t last all day on me, but it does last a while and I’m happy with it.

Hair Care

amika Bombshell Blowout Spray

I have to be honest, I don’t do very much to my hair on a regular basis. Which is why there are only two products in this section. I don’t even use conditioner and pretty much always let my hair air dry. However, when I do decide to do something with my hair, this is one of the only products I will use! It gives me that perfect blow out without even really trying. It also helps to give some volume to my hair after I have let it air dry (without making it feel crunchy!). It is an all around great product.

Batiste Dry Shampoo

This is my FAVORITE dry shampoo. I’ve tried a few other ones but always go back to this. My current favorite scent is the Cherry Blossom but I also loved the Paisley one. Perfect for getting rid of oily third day hair – which I often suffer from because I try to only wash my hair 2-3 times a week.

Lip Lovin’ Tag!

I was over on The Makeup Honey recently while I’ve been trying to catch up on all the beauty blogs I read but have neglected over the last few months, and came across this great tag Sian created called the Lip Lovin’ Tag. I’m a huge fan of lip products so I thought it sounded like fun! In my interpretation of this tag, however, I slightly expanded the definition of “lipstick” to include liquid lipsticks and those types of products since I use those more often than traditional lipsticks.

So here is my answer to The Makeup Honey’s new Lip Lovin’ Tag!

1. What was the first lipstick you ever owned?

cherries in the snow

The first lipstick I ever remember buying is Revlon Cherries in the Snow. I’m sure I owned products before that, but I remember reading something about Cherries in the Snow and going out and purchasing it the next day. It is a beautiful color and I think I actually still have it in the back of my makeup collection for sentimental purposes. That was basically my gateway lipstick!

2. Which lip product has been the biggest disappointment?

nyx lip creams

This is an easy one: the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams. I had high hopes for them but ended up being very disappointed. I hated the smell, disliked the way they felt on my lips, and they were not as long wearing or transfer proof as I expected. I felt like they got all over my face! I suppose I’m not super surprised I didn’t like them as most of NYX’s lip products haven’t worked for me (besides the Matte Lipsticks. Those are wonderful!).

3. Which lipstick is your holy grail product?

touch of spice - temptalia

This is a hard question to answer…I switch things up all the time but the one lipstick I always find myself going back to is the Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte lipstick in Touch of Spice. It is the perfect deep nude for my skin tone. It pulls a brownish mauve on me which I think is very wearable and flattering. And it goes with any eye look I put together. It is long wearing (which I love) and I find myself reaching for it all year long.

4. Roughly how many lipsticks do you own?

I would estimate around…30-40? That includes traditional lipsticks, liquid lipsticks, and lip stains.

5. If you could only ever have 3 lip products for the rest of your life, which 3 would they be and why?

PicMonkey Collage

(1) (MALIN & GOETZ) Mojito Lip Balm – This is my favorite lip balm ever. I only really wear it at night or on days when I’m not going anywhere because it is quite thick but it does wonders for my lips. I always wake up with wonderfully smooth and hydrated lips when I wake up. Game changer.

(2) A great red lip stain – I am a huge fan of lip stains. They are easy to use, hard to mess up, and last all day! My favorites are theBalm Stainiac and The Face Shop Aqua Tint 01 Juicy Cherry.

(3) A matte red liquid lipstick – My two personal favorites are the Milani Amore Matte Lip Cream in Desire and the Rimmel Provocalips 16hr Lip Color in Play With Fire. Red is classic and always appropriate. And the liquid to matte formula just make it even better!

6. Matte or glossy?

Matte. Always. End of story.

7. Which is the most expensive lipstick you own?

I don’t have a lot of high end lipsticks or lip products, but I’d say my most expensive lipstick I ever purchased is the Lipstick Queen Medieval. It’s only $24 which by high end standards is not a lot, but it was a lot for me at the time. Once I become a real adult and have real money to spend on luxury products, a YSL or Dior lipstick is at the top of my list!

8. What is the cheapest lipstick in your collection?

I really love the Wet ‘n Wild MegaLast Lip Colors. I have three of them and purchased them for around $0.99 each!

9. What is your favorite non lipstick lip product?

I already mentioned the (MALIN & GOETZ) Mojito Lip Balm which is my obvious answer, but I am also a huge fan of the Lipstick Queen Lip Liner in Nude. It works with almost every lipstick I own and does a wonderful job of extending the wear time of my lip products!

10. What non-traditional lip color would you love to see come into fashion?

amber rose

Definitely blue. I’m not sure if I could pull it off, but Amber Rose sure looks awesome in it!

What would your answers to this tag be? This is open to anyone who wants to do it! And be sure to check out The Makeup Honey’s Lip Lovin’ Tag that started it all!

8 Beauty Products I Would Splurge On If I Had An Extra $500

Maybe I’m just weird, but one of the things I like to do when I am bored is go on Sephora’s website and imagine I won a $500 shopping spree. What products would I splurge on? How would I choose to spend that money? I don’t know about anyone else, but there are some products that I would never spend my hard-earned money on because they are either too pricey or too unnecessary. But if the money was given to me…well that’s a whole different story!

Note: This is just for fun. If I had and extra $500 laying around I probably wouldn’t spend it on makeup or beauty products. There are definitely more important things in life! But it is fun to think about…and you never know when you may win a Sephora shopping spree! It’s always good to be prepared!

Product 1: GLAMGLOW Youthmud Tinglexfoliate Treatment – $69

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 10.29.11 PM

I recently impulse purchased the 0.5 oz sample of this GLAMGLOW mask (which is surprisingly a better economic purchase at $19 for 0.5 oz as opposed to the 1.7 oz full size product for $69) and I admit, my life is changed. I love this mask. It is tingly, smells like a spa, and really does make a difference on my skin.

The problem: how do I justify spending $69 for mud? Make no mistake – this is mud. There are even little sticks and leaves in it that really do make me think that GLAMGLOW is going into the woods behind their factory, shoveling dirt from the ground, mixing it with some other stuff, and selling it as an innovative miracle mask. Don’t get me wrong, I love it and I am now successfully on the GLAMGLOW train, I just seriously question my sanity, as well as capitalism’s hold on me, when I’m paying $69 for a 1.7 oz jar of wet dirt. That being said, if I won a gift card or shopping spree or even the lottery, I would definitely purchase enough GLAMGLOW mud to cover my entire body. No ragrets.

Product 2: Dior Rosy Glow Healthy Glow Awakening Blush – $44

Screen Shot 2015-10-06 at 10.30.00 PM

I have always been intrigued by these type of color adjusting products! They are like the pants from the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants that magically adjust and fit to each girl despite their differing body types. Having a blush that will change to be your perfect shade of pink is my idea of wonderful. But at $44 a pop, this beautiful Dior blush is eternally relegated to my “save for later” list.

Product 3: Marc Jacobs Beauty The Bronze Bronzer Brush No. 12 – $78

You’re eyes are not deceiving you! This Marc Jacobs Bronzer Brush is truly $78. For $78 this brush had better be magical! And according to the Sephora reviews it is about as close to magic as a makeup brush can get. I’m intrigued to find out exactly why a tool that you use to put your already expensive-enough makeup on your face is so expensive on its own. If I won a shopping spree, I’d be sure to find out!

Product 4: Viseart Eyeshadow Palette in No. 1 Neutral Matte – $80

Anyone who knows me knows that I have a serious love affair with matte eyeshadows. Especially warm orange and brown matte shadows. That is why this palette speaks to my soul! Unfortunately,  this soul-speaker also comes with an $80 price tag.  Now, when considering the value of eyeshadow palettes, beauty gurus online always like to break the price down to the cost per ounce of product to show that the palette is worth it. For example, the Urban Decay Naked Smokey Palette which came out earlier this year retails for $54 and contains 0.60 ounces across 12 shadows. This Viseart palette also contains 12 shadows but retails for $80 for 0.84 ounces. I’m not a math wiz, but if I did the math correctly, the UD palette value is $90/oz while the Viseart palette value is about $95/oz. That’s not a huge difference value wise but does it help ease any of the sticker shock on the Viseart palette for me? Not really. This is the type of splurgy product I would use a birthday gift card on not my hard earned dollars.

Product 5: Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill Mascara – $32

I’ve always been a drugstore mascara kind of girl. While some products I will splurge on, mascara is one of those things that I have trouble spending a lot of money on. Why do I need to spend $30 on something that I’m going to have to throw away in 3-4 months? Drugstore mascaras work really well for me and I’m happy with them. But my ultimate lust-worthy mascara is the Armani Eyes To Kill Mascara. Forget Dior or Lancome! Armani has captured my heart. I’ve always wanted to try this mascara and would definitely take advantage of a situation where I may have the chance to make my mascara dream come true!

Product 6: Fresh Black Tea Age Delay Cream – $95

I recently received a sample of this cream and I was amazed. I’m not super into anti-aging products as I don’t think my skin really needs that right now, but this cream was wonderful. It was thick but not too heavy and was moisturizing without being greasy. I was all ready to purchase the full size until I saw the price. Because of that, this moisturizer is at the top of my list of outrageous things to buy should I ever come into some extra cash.

Product 7: Kevyn Aucoin The Celestial Bronzing Veil – $48

Meow! This is one sexy bronzer. Definitely worthy to use with my $78 Marc Jacobs bronzer brush! Every swipe would be like brushing a $100 bill on my face. Doesn’t that sound nice? On a slightly more serious note, Kevyn Aucoin makeup has always been on my dream list. If I had a million dollars to spend on makeup, I would own Kevyn Aucoin’s entire line.

Product 8: Burberry Wet & Dry Silk Shadow – $29

Now you may be asking yourself, KD Bonbon, if you’re struggling with paying $80 for 12 eyeshadows, what are you thinking considering spending nearly $30 on a single eyeshadow?! I don’t know. I’m crazy. If we’re going full-forward looking at how I would reasonably spend my imaginary shopping spree funds, a single, luxury, Burberry eyeshadow would be it. You can see where my priorities are…

Running total: $475

What would I spend the remaining $25 on? I don’t know. I guess I’m leaving my options open. What spluge-worthy beauty products would you purchase if you received a shopping spree or a gift card? Do you spend your own money differently than money you receive as a gift?

Best Halloween YouTube Tutorial Videos

Halloween is a fun time for any beauty lover! You get to dress up as whatever you want and wear crazy makeup as well as have a great excuse to eat lots of candy. It’s a time to experiment with products and colors that you would usually never wear and just have fun.

Over the years, I’ve turned to YouTube for many costume inspirations as well as makeup tutorials for looks I am trying to do. YouTube is a fantastic resource for everything Halloween from costumes to party ideas, house decor and spooky nail art – there is something for everyone!

Here’s some of my favorite Halloween costume and makeup tutorials from YouTube. Some are easy, others are a lot more intense. Some of these tutorials may not help you out this year if you are like me and don’t decide on your costume until the very last minute but I have included some last-minute costume ideas and makeup tutorials as well!

Happy Halloween!

Comic Book Makeup by Madeyewlook

Lex (Madeyewlook) is one of my all time favorite makeup artists on YouTube. She specializes in body painting and creates some amazing, intense, and scary looks! She puts up dramatic tutorials all year round but during Halloween she kicks it up a notch and delivers some amazing looks. These comic book makeup looks are great last minute ideas that are easy to do and customizable to the products you already have. Later down in this post we’ll see some more looks by Lex that show how talented she really is.

Greek Goddess by Nicole Guerriero

I’ve been some version of a Greek goddess for the past three years. This is one of the tutorials I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from because it’s bold and bronzy but easy to tone down into something more natural as well. The lip part of this tutorial is definitely my favorite and is a trick I’ve used over and over again!

Elsa from Frozen by Angela Lanter

Frozen was one of the biggest movies of the year and Elsa one of the most popular costumes this Halloween. With that purple eyeshadow, big lashes, and blonde hair, who wouldn’t want to be Elsa for Halloween! This is a pretty easy, fun tutorial that will definitely make you the best Elsa at that Halloween party!

Sugar Skull by Dulce Candy

There are so many variations of sugar skull tutorials on YouTube but I really like this simple black and white one. It’s understated but still awesome. Dulce does a great job of explaining what you need to do so the look is very easy! This face look would be a great last-minute idea!

Zombie by Tess Christine

Zombies are so in right now. This zombie tutorial is pretty cool but does require some special products so it may not make a great last-minute costume idea. However, you could always tone down the gore and make do with products you already have. Then just rip up some old clothes and walk around like you are ready to eat some braaaaains!

Rainbow Dash by From Head to Toe

Who doesn’t love My Little Ponies? Rainbow Dash is definitely my favorite one and Jen does a great job of adapting the style of Rainbow Dash into a makeup look! And you don’t need any special face paints to complete this look! Just some colorful eyeshadow!

Frankenstein Makeup by Madeyewlook

Another great tutorial by Lex! This one is a lot more intense than the last one we saw from her and definitely requires some planning and skill. Isn’t she amazingly talented? I love watching her videos and seeing her transformations. Definitely go subscribe to her channel to see more of her amazing creations!

Mystical Gypsy by Dulce Candy

This kind of tutorial could be adapted to fit all sorts of costume ideas (or just be worn as a dramatic night eye look). Gypsy costumes are always popular and this is a great makeup look to go with your costume!

Vampire Bite by Christina Rose

If you don’t want to do a full face of makeup or worry about buying a costume, a simple vampire bite is a great subtle Halloween look! Just wear jeans and a black top and let the vampire bite speak for itself. I really love Christina’s version because it looks so cool and is still really easy to put together.

What are you going to be for Halloween? Get any ideas from this list?

October Birchbox Review!

My October Birchbox came a few weeks ago and I’m finally ready to share my review of the box I received with you! Sorry it has taken so long but this is more of a review and less of an “unboxing” because I have actually been using these products for the past two weeks in order to tell you all what I really think of them. I think knowing exactly how the products one gets in their monthly subscription box perform helps you to make a more informed decision on what subscription services to try out or what products to purchase for yourself! Overall, I was pretty happy with my box this month. I received a few products that I’ve really been liking so far and one that I really hate. Check out below to see what I got in my October Birchbox!

You can subscribe to get your own Birchbox for $10/month here!

1. Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream

balance me eye cream

What Birchbox says: “The hardworking formula helps lift sagging skin, brighten under eye circles, and smooth away fine lines using 99% natural ingredients…This lightweight cream absorbs quickly into skin and has a lovely lavender-herb scent…Twice a day, dab a pea-sized amount onto under eye area, gently tapping with ring finger until fully absorbed.”

My thoughts: So far I’ve really been enjoying this eye cream. I use it at night only because I already have a great day eye cream (check out my 6 Products I Use Everyday post to find out what it is!) and have been searching for a night eye cream. I have very sensitive eyes that cannot handle most heavy night creams. As Birchbox says, this eye cream is very lightweight, absorbs quickly into my skin and does a great job moisturizing my under eyes. Despite the kind of strong scent of the cream (smells like ginger to me, not lavender) it does not irritate my eyes which is a major plus for me.

Product details: Full size is 0.5 fl oz and retails for $38 on birchbox.com

2. Coastal Scents Revealed 2 Palette Eyeshadow Sampler

cs revealed

What Birchbox says: “We sometimes (okay, always) have trouble selecting just one single shade of eye shadow to buy. So we’re tickled pink about this new palette from Coastal Scents. A follow-up to their popular Revealed palette, its 20 shadows keep things rosy—from barely-there pastel pink to rich violet, dusty rose to pink champagne…Apply to lids using included brushes. Blend as needed to achieve your desired look.”

My thoughts: I hate getting these little eye shadow sampler things in my subscription boxes. The packaging sucks and the quality in these samplers is usually worse than the normal sized product. Getting a sampler like this does not influence whether or not I want to buy the full size product it just makes me wish I had gotten something else in my Birchbox. I’m sure the Revealed 2 palette is good (it has a lot of great reviews on Birchbox’s website) but I don’t need any more neutral palettes so I won’t be purchasing it. There’s not much more to say other than I’m not going to use this little sampler and it’s probably going to go into the trash.

Product details: Coastal Scents Revealed Palette Set on the Birchbox website comes with the palette (20 colors) and 3 brushes for $34 or you can currently get the palette by itself from the Coastal Scents website for $20

3. Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle

beauty protector

What Birchbox says: “Beauty Protector’s leave-in mist is about as versatile as they come. It conditions, shields from heat and sun damage, and–of course–detangles, among other things. Plus, it’s 100% vegan and suitable for all hair types…Shampoo, condition, and towel dry hair. Hold the Protect & Detangle bottle four to six inches away from your scalp, and spray a few times. Comb through hair to ensure that the product is evenly diffused, and style as desired.”

My thoughts: This is a great spray in product for your hair. It smells nice and doesn’t make my hair feel weird, which is always good. I prefer spray leave in treatments as opposed to creams or serums because my hands don’t get all sticky or oily so this product is right up my alley! I think I need to use it more to decide if I like it more than my current favorite, the It’s a 10 Miracle Leave in Product, but so far it has been a good alternative that I have enjoyed using.

Product details: Full size is 8 oz and retails for $21.95 on birchbox.com

4. ModelCo Party Proof Matte Lipstick in Kitty

party proof

What Birchbox says: “This hydrating, semi-matte lip color lives up to its cheeky moniker. Whether you’re heading to a backyard BBQ or a black tie gala, it’s guaranteed to stay put through plates of baby back ribs, champagne toasts, and beyond…Dab on for a casual look, or use a lip brush for a more precise finish. Blot with a tissue for a super-matte finish.”

My thoughts: This color is a pretty perfect “my lips but better” color for me! The formula is really nice and smooth and it looks good on the lips. However, I don’t think this lipstick is as long-wearing as the company claims it is. It only lasts a few hours on me before I need to reapply. This isn’t a problem for me as I usually need to reapply my lipstick throughout the day, but if a company claims something about their product, you would expect it to live up to that claim. And in the case, this lipstick does not live up to the “party proof” long-wearing claim (at least on me). But overall I do really like this lipstick and know I will get a lot of use out of it!

Product details: Kitty is sold as part of the Neutrals Trio on birchbox.com for $24 or can be purchased individually on the ModelCo website for $16.95 (lipsticks in trio are 0.13 oz but I’m not sure if that is the full size)

5. Dr. Brandt Pores No More Vacuum Cleaner Blackhead Extractor

pores no more

What Birchbox says: “A gentle face mask that draws out dirt and oil like a magnet, clearing blackheads and tightening pores…Two to three times a week, apply a thin layer of the mask to affected areas after cleansing. Let dry 5–10 minutes—or until it turns white. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.”

My thoughts: This is a pretty cool mask. I’ve used it a few times and have definitely noticed a difference in the appearance of blackheads on my nose. You also do not need to apply a lot of this product to get results. Therefore, I think this sample will last a long time! The mask goes on clear and then slowly turns a blueish-white, which is pretty cool to watch. However, this product is pretty expensive and I think blackhead removing pore strips are a lot more effective in getting rid of blackheads. If you prefer masks to strips there are also a tons of other masks that are less expensive and just as effective. Therefore, I probably won’t be purchasing the full size of this product but I will definitely use up the sample that I received.

Product details: Can be purchased on birchbox.com as a part of the Dr. Brandt Exclusive Clean Up Nice Kit for $45 (Note: this is a really good deal because the kit contains a the full size of the Pores No More Vacuum Cleaner which retails for $45 individually as well as sample sizes of the Pores No More cleanser, anti-aging mattifying lotion, BB cream, and a small canvas zippered bag!)

If you liked what you saw, you can subscribe to Birchbox for $10/month at birchbox.com!

What did you get in your October Birchbox? Do you dislike getting eyeshadow samplers as much as I do? Let me know in the comments below!

6 Beauty & Makeup Products I Use Everyday

This is a very simple post. Below are six products that I use everyday. Even if I only have five minutes (or less!) in the morning these products are the ones I will spend the extra time putting on. They make a huge difference to my face and help me to look more awake and put together. I think it is really important to have a handful of products that you know you can reach for as you are running out the door. I keep all these products within arms reach on my vanity so that I know exactly where they are and never have to go searching for them.

1. Origins GinZing Eye Cream ($30)

This is a product I began using three weeks ago and it has quickly become part of my everyday morning routine. You only need a small amount for each eye, so although this eye cream is a bit pricey, it will last you a long time. I just dab a little on my ring finger and then tap it on under my eyes. It really works to brighten up my under eyes and make them feel refreshed. I generally have sensitive eyes and this product doesn’t irritate them at all which is a plus.

2. Black Eyeliner – Covergirl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner ($6)

The exact eyeliner I use for this varies but recently I have been loving this Covergirl black liner. I only apply it to my tightline to make my lashes look fuller and my eyes stand out. When I’m running late and I don’t have a lot of time, this step and the next product I’ll talk about is something I will not skip. It makes me look more awake and put together.

3. Black Mascara – Revlon Lash Potion ($8.50)

Mascara is a must for me! This Revlon one is the one I am currently using and I really like it! I don’t know if it is my favorite mascara ever, but it makes my lashes look voluminous and separated and doesn’t smudge on me. If you have any drugstore mascara suggestions, let me know in the comments below! I would love to try some new ones out!

4. Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel ($22)

In my opinion, brows are a really important part of everyone’s makeup routine – or at least they should be! Especially when you are not wearing a lot of makeup, defined brows help to frame your face and make you look put together in a very subtle way. The idea is to fill in your brows in a way that makes a difference to your face so that someone looking at you will think “Wow, she looks nice today” as opposed to, “Wow, look at her brows.” On days when I don’t wear a lot of makeup I will use a tinted brow gel like the Anastasia one because in one step it helps to make my brows look more filled in and keeps my brow hairs in place.

5. Be a Bombshell Cosmetics Smooth Criminal Powder ($12)

I recently got this in my September Ipsy Bag (check out what else I got in my box here!) and have fallen in love with it. On days I’m running out the door, it takes the place of concealer, foundation, and/or powder for me. It also works well as a finishing powder over foundation. It makes your skin insanely smooth and fills in your pores so your face looks flawless.

6. Lip Balm – Korres Lip Butter in Guava ($12)

Now, it is by no means necessary to spend this much money on lip balm! There are so many great lip balms you can get for under two or three dollars at the drugstore. However, I got this lip balm in a value set when Korres was on Hautelook and as part of the deal, I got this at a great price. I’ve been using it for a few months and it is a really awesome product. The scent is really nice and fruity but not overly strong and it feels great on your lips. I use this before bed and when I wake up and my lips feel smooth and nice. So if you want to invest in a nice lip balm (or technically lip butter), I would recommend this one, but it really is not necessary.

Let’s Talk About How Awesome My September Ipsy Bag Was!

It’s been a while since I’ve been signed up for Ipsy (previously known as Glam Bag) but last month I thought I would sign up again and see how I liked it now that the company has had time to grow and improve their system. My first bag back was the September “Street Style” bag and I must say, I am very pleased! I may ever go as far to say that I’m ecstatic!

For those of you not familiar with Ipsy, it is a monthly beauty subscription box (or in this case, bag) where for $10/month you receive approximately 5 deluxe samples or full size makeup and beauty products to try out. Each bag is a different combination of products available that month and depending on what you bag contains that month, this is a great value service that allows you to try new and different products that you wouldn’t otherwise get the chance to try.

That being said, some month’s bags are awesome, some are okay, and some suck. It all depends on your personal preferences toward products and pure luck. This month I happened to luck out but there have been months that I’ve been extremely disappointed with the boxes I get from subscription services like this. It’s not a sure thing that you will be completely satisfied but in my opinion it’s worth it. I love getting something fun in the mail every month and appreciate the exposure to new brands and products.

Like I said, this month I think I got really lucky!  So take a look inside my bag below and if you like what you see you can get your own Ipsy bag for $10/mo here!

Unfortunately I don’t have a picture of the bag itself but it is a metallic grey square zippered bag with studs along the top. When I first saw it I will admit that I wasn’t super impressed because it isn’t really my style but the bag feels nice and seems well made. And the more I look at the bag sitting on my desk, the more the design is growing on me. I mostly use these Ipsy bags for when I go on vacation to store makeup or jewelry so I’m sure I will end up getting a lot of use out of this bag for that purpose since it is slightly bigger than some of the previous bags.

Inside I received 5 items – 3 full size products and 2 deluxe samples. Here is an overview of what I received:

The first product I received was the Nourish Organics Moisturizing Cream Face Cleanser.

face wash

Full size product retails for $13.99 on their website. Get 30% off with code IPSY30!

What Ipsy says about the product: “This gentle cleanser washes away impurities without drying, irritating or causing redness. Cucumber hydrates and soothes. Watercress, rich in antioxidants, helps protect skin from free radical damage. Alcohol-Free. Gluten-Free. Vegan.”

My feelings: I like this cleanser. Not love. But like. It’s a gentle milky cleanser that smells organic (if that is even a smell) and makes my face feel clean and smooth. When you’re rinsing the cleanser off, it does have that squeaky “too clean” feeling that I’m not a huge fan of, but after you dry your face the feeling goes away. I’ve used it a few times and haven’t noticed any adverse reactions and like the way my skin looks after using it. It would definitely be on my list to repurchase after I finish this sample and get through some of my other cleansers.

The next product was a full size Maybelline Master Glaze Blush Stick in “Make a Mauve”:

master glaze

This product retails for $8.99 at Ulta and they always have BOGO 50% off sales on Maybelline products as well as coupons for $3.50 off purchases of $10 or more!

What Ipsy says about this product: “Now cheeks glisten with the sheerest color glaze. Cheeks go dewy and gently glazed with this portable, creamy blush stick. Glazed pearls + a shea butter glide provide blendable, natural color and smooth, even application. Fragrance Free. Non-comedogenic. Suitable for all skin types.”

Top is the blush blended out and bottom is the full color of the product.

My feelings: I’ve been considering trying these Blush Sticks from Maybelline for a while now but since I’ve never had much luck with cream blushes, I never took the plunge and bought one. That is why I am so happy that I received this one in “Make a Mauve” in my Ipsy bag! I really like this product! The color is great for fall – it’s a brighter plum shade – and the product itself is awesome. I’ve been wearing it every day since I got it and I love the results. I first apply the product to two fingers and then pat the color onto the apples of my cheek, blending it out until it is even. I then like to top the cream with a powder blush in a similar shade to extend the wear of it. I use the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Flush (which was limited edition but Blushing Bride is similar) for this and the color lasts all day on me. Overall, I am very happy with the product and think I may go pick out a few more shades!

Next up we have a deluxe sample of the Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask:

don't despair repair

The full size of this mask retails for $26. Use the code IPSYSEPT14 to get free shipping on Briogeo’s website!

What Ipsy says about this product: “Repair and treat dry, damaged and breaking hair with Don’t Despair, Repair!™ deep conditioning mask…This unique complex of targeted ingredients helps increase hair elasticity and moisture to prevent breakage, promotes healthy shine and luster, and replenishes strength…In lab studies, the use of Don’t Despair, Repair!™ resulted in 81% less hair breakage after just three uses. Safe for color-treated, chemically-treated, and keratin-treated hair. For those with fine or thin hair, we recommend focusing the treatment on the mid-length to the ends of the hair only, and rinsing thoroughly.”

My feelings: I’ve used this once so far. You don’t need very much of it, which means you should get more than a few uses out of the 1 fl oz sample. It made my hair feel soft and moisturized but not greasy so that is a plus. I don’t know if I would repurchase it because it is expensive and didn’t do anything amazing that my $3 Aussie 3 Minute Miracle can’t do, but I do like it and I will be happy to use all of this sample!

Next we have the Pacifica 7 Free Nail Polish in Red Red Wine:

This product retails for $9.00. Use the code FallBeauty on their website to get 20% your entire purchase!

What Ipsy says about this product: “Our new 7 Free Nail Polish is long lasting and void of many chemicals that one would find in traditional nail polish. Amazing vibrant colors that go on smooth and stay put. Plus we have added a custom wide 100% vegan brush for easier application. 7 Free is formulated without parabens, phthalates (dibutyl phthalate), toluene, xylene, camphor, formaldehyde, resin, and animal byproducts.”

My feelings: This is a nice nail polish! After taking the above pictures I painted all of my nails with it and have gotten many compliments on the color so far. It is a much deeper wine red color than the pictures above show it as (the stock photo is much closer to the actual color). It is not a very unique color, but it is a universally appealing and flattering color. That’s only one coat on my thumb nail in the picture above so you can see that the color is pretty opaque. It only took two coats to get perfect coverage and the resulting look is not streaky at all. I’ve only had it on for a few hours so I don’t know how long the polish lasts before chipping. Usually polishes only last 2-3 days on me before they begin to chip so if this Pacifica polish can go at least that long I will be happy.

Last but not least we have a full size  Be a Bombshell Cosmetics Smooth Criminal Powder:

smooth criminal

The Smooth Criminal Powder retails for $12. Use the coupon code IPSY30 on Be a Bombshell Cosmetic’s website to receive 30% off your purchase + a free Coco Delight Lip Gloss!

What Ipsy says about this product: “This lightweight, ultra-fine, silky formula softens the appearance of imperfections, fine lines, and pores while leaving you with a beautiful glow. This finishing powder can be worn alone or to set your foundation. The translucent formula works for all skin tones. It is made from 100% silica and leaves your skin with a matte finish without drying it out.”

My feelings: I’ve saved the best for last. This powder is amazing! My new holy grail product! I was unsure of how I would use this at first and put it to the side for a few days but after checking out the reviews of the product on the Be a Bombshell Cosmetics website and hearing how much others loved the product I gave it a try. And I am glad I did! This powder is translucent, silky, lightweight and makes my face look flawless. It fills in/blurs pours and makes your face feel and look wonderful. I even use this under the eyes to set my concealer and I find that is all I need for the day! What a great product. When I run out of this  I will definitely be buying more!

The Evolution of Jia’s Hair [Miss A]

Korean pop group Miss A’s Jia has been through many hair transformations. With every new single, Jia’s hair changes dramatically. From pink to blond to brown, Jia has shown herself to be a true hair chameleon rocking each and every one of her many hair looks!

Who could forget Jia’s bright pink hair from when Miss A first debuted back in 2010. Her “Good Girl Bad Girl” locks were stunning and so badass! I remember watching Miss A’s first music video and gushing with my friend about how awesome “the pink haired girl” was. This look is definitely one of Jia’s most iconic!

When Miss A debuted their next hit, Breathe, the lead single from their second single album “Step Up,” Jia also debuted her new hair! Rocking a platinum blonde bob (with some remnants of her previous pink do at the ends) Jia was fierce!

For a short time around the release of “Love Alone,” Jia gave her hair a slightly more natural tone with this light brown short hair cut. It was a cute look but didn’t make her stand out from her fellow members as much as her bright, wild hair choices did. However, like many of her hairstyles, it didn’t last too long!

Miss A’s next big hit was 2011’s “Good Bye Baby” where Jia donned these fiery red locks! This look is one of my personal favorites! She looks beautiful in the “Good Bye Baby” music video and truly stands out during their live performances. Jia’s hair definitely matched the kickass vibe of the song!

With the highly anticipated release of “Touch,” Miss A’s 4th studio project, Jia made a complete 180 with her hair opting for this black hair style that matching the haunting tone of the song. How is it possible that this woman can rock edgy black hair just as well as fluorescent pink?

For “I Don’t Need a Man,” the first single off their “Independent Women Part. III” EP, Jia’s hair remained largely the same but looked more sleek and put together. She certainly looked like she didn’t need a man to be awesome!

Sleek, cool, and sophisticated! That is what I thought of when Jia debuted this look with the group’s most recent project “Hush.” The video is super cool and sexy and so is Jia’s hair. With this look, Jia proved that she can still stand out in the group with more traditional colored hair especially when it is so sleekly styled.

Most recently, Jia has been rocking some long brown and blonde locks. I think she’s looking just as stunning as ever! Especially with that lip color and military inspired jacket in the second picture above! And look! There’s some pink tips! Is Jia missing her bright pink hair?

Miss A is due for a comeback soon and I for one cannot wait to see what transformation Jia will make this time!

What is your favorite Jia hair color/style? Do you miss her pink hair too? What other Miss A member’s hair are you lusting after?
