Wow. In a recent photo shoot in New York City for Korea’s W Magazine, Han Ye Seul oozes strength and straight feminine power! The release of this shoot comes a few days after the announcement that Han Ye Seul is joining Key East Entertainment, ending her longtime working relationship with SB Entertainment. Her fans can only hope that this announcement and magazine spread means we will be seeing more of her in the near future!
So today I wanted to show you all how to get Ye Seul’s edgy makeup look from the photo shoot! This look is high fashion, dramatic, and definitely not for the faint of heart. However, it is a good makeup look to have up your sleeve as you never know when you may need as sultry, vampy look! And just because this is a high fashion look doesn’t mean you have to pay a high fashion price! I’ll give you some inexpensive by high-quality drugstore options that will give you the same look but not break the bank!
Let’s get on with the look!
There are three main elements to achieving the makeup look you can see in the photos below: straight, dark eyebrows, heavy lined eyes, and bold vampy lips.
Han Ye Seul’s strong brows follow the recent trend in Korea featuring dark filled in brows that run parallel to the eyes in a straight line instead of curving up and then down. To get straight brows like this temporarily, use a full cover concealer or foundation that matches your skin tone to cover any part of your brow that curves up or down. Then take a matte eyeshadow or brow powder that matches your hair color and an angled brush and fill in your brows with short, light strokes. I’d recommend the E.L.F. Eyebrow Kit or the NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder for this. Follow the general direction your brows head, but keep them as straight as possible, remaining parallel to your eyes. Make sure you don’t take the ends out too far! You don’t want to look like a cartoon character!
Here’s a helpful picture tutorial on how to achieve straight Korean-like brows – just keep in mind that to get brows like Han Ye Seul, they need to be more dramatic than this tutorial shows. Brows like these aren’t meant to look natural. They are bold, high fashion brows that make a statement.
To get Han Ye Seul’s sultry, dramatic eyes you only need a few products:
- A black pencil eyeliner (Recommended: Rimmel Scandal Eyes in black)
- A black or dark brown matte eyeshadow (Recommended: Jane Matte Eyeshadow in Licorice or Urban Decay Naked Basics in Crave, the darkest color in the palette)
- A small blending or shading brush (Recommended: Sigma E32 or Sigma E20)
- Mascara (Recommended: Covergirl Lash Blast in blackest black)
First, thickly line your upper and lower lash line completely encircling your eye from inner corner to outer corner. You also want to extend the eyeliner past your outer corner slightly by carefully extending the lower lash line straight out and then meeting that line with a slightly downward point line coming from your top lash line. At this point, your liner doesn’t have to be perfect, you just want to get the color down. Then tightline your eye by gently pulling your upper lid up to expose the skin below your top lashes and running the liner along your lashes. Line your lower water line with the pencil by gently pulling down on your lower lash line. Be sure to get the black all the way into your inner corner; you want to make sure your eye is complete cased in black with no skin showing.
Then take the matte black or dark brown eyeshadow and the smudge brush and, after dipping your brush in the color and tapping off any excess color, apply the eyeshadow wherever you placed the liner. Softly use the brush to blend out the color and diffuse the edges so they look soft and not overly harsh. The eyeshadow will help to set the eyeliner so it won’t smudge and will add a smokey look to the eyes.
Pro tip: If you get any fallout, just brush it away with a fluffy brush – don’t try to wipe it off with your fingers or you will smear it everywhere and ruin your look.
Finally, apply a few coats of mascara and you are finished with the eyes!
To complete your Han Ye Seul look, you need the perfect vampy lip that will compliment the bold brows and dramatic eyes. Stick with a dark matte burgundy or purple that will be flattering and long lasting.
Here’s a few drugstore lipstick options I would recommend:
- Wet n’ Wild Megalast Lip Color in Cherry Bomb (get it here)
- Revlon Super Lustrous Lipcolor in Va Va Violet (get it here) – this one is not matte, but you can make it less shiny by blotting off the top layer of shine with a tissue after application
